The Morrison Government and their friends in the fossil fuel lobby have been busy.

Paul for the team at GetUp writes me the following:

“While we’ve been checking on our neighbours and doing the right thing to make sure all of us are safe and healthy, they’ve been rushing through some disastrous decisions.

They lifted the ban on onshore gas in Victoria, allowed coal mines to operate under one of Sydney’s major water sources, and are pushing to open up swathes of country to dangerous fracking projects.1, 2, 3

So with help from thousands of GetUp members like you, we wasted no time in launching the Climate Accountability Project.

The mandate was simple — make sure no politicians or dirty energy executives exploited this pandemic at the cost of our future and wellbeing. And Uta, it’s kept us very busy.

When a gas-stacked commission of corporate cronies recommended billions in public money for the gas industry, we leapt into action. First, we called out the gas industry ties in Morrison’s National Covid-19 Coordination Commission (NCCC) — lodging a submission with a Senate Select Committee over the lack of transparency.

Covid commission boss Nev Power steps back at gas company amid conflict of interest concerns, The Guardian, 23 May 2020

And when NCCC Chair Nev Power faced questioning, we helped put his gross conflicts of interest (with millions of dollars in stock on the line) front and centre. That led to a new public confession: Power didn’t even know whether he was still getting paid for his 19 corporate board positions, including at least $50,000 from gas company Strike Energy.4

Finally, we drove the point home together with our friends at 350 as part of their Fossil Fuel Watch project, placing billboards outside parliament exposing Morrison for putting his fossil fuel mates before everyday people.

Billboard outside Parliament House: "Prime Minister, Ditch your gas mates, we want a clean energy future."

Now the credibility of the NCCC is on shaky ground, along with its recommendations for billions in public money for dirty energy.

We’ve been busy Uta, but we’re not done yet. We’ve launched the months-long legal process on several Freedom of Information requests investigating how the gas-loaded NCCC was set up, what meetings they’re holding and who they’re holding them with. We’ll keep you updated on what they reveal.

There’s more to do. We’re up against the powerful gas lobby — but we’re ready. Stay tuned.
